Today I started reading Cognitive and Behavioral Components of a seasonal Psychological Skills attaining Program for Competitive Figure Skaters by Garry L. Martin and Adrienne Toogood from the University of Manitoba. This article is interesting to me because I am a competitive figure skater as well. The sport can be very tough both mentally and physically and sports psychology is very helpful with keeping the mind in check.
In the first part of my reading I learned that a sport psychology program was developed for the provincial figure skating team. The majority of the participants are ages 12-16. I also learned that 3/4 are female while 1/4 is male. A checklist was developed to identify which areas a skater might require the most help with. The goal of the list is to target the problem areas so that they can help solve the problems. In my next blog post I will write more about how using behavioral and cognitive techniques can have an important role in sport psychology.
